Key hits and impressive pitching gave the
Gamecocks a crucial sweep this weekend over
Georgia Southern to avenge an earlier double-header
loss to the nationally ranked Eagles.
Carolina, sixth in the nation with a :U-8 record,
picked up its ninth consecutive win and a probably
NCAA playoff at-large bid in front of a weekend
crowd of over 83(H).
SATURDAY AFTERNOON, Senior Bill Landrum,
now 8-2, was a dominant factor in the 8-1 Carolina

Jim Curl led off for Carolina in the second inning
and reached first base after the shortstop hobbled the
ball. Mark Boatwright advanced Curl to second on a
sacrifice bunt and Curl scored on Jamie Thaw's
double to right field.
Georgia Southern, now 29-14-1, came back to tie the
game at one apiece in the third when catcher Marty
Pevev smashed a homcrun over the center field
fence.
After an uneventful fifth, Carolina picked up two
runs in the sixth to gain a 3-1 lead. Boatwright
started the bottom half of the inning with a blooper

out. McCarthy beat out a throw from the second
baseman to load the bases. Jonson chopped a pitch
between the pitcher and the first baseman, and beat
the throw to first, scoring Boatwright. Ktienne
Farquharson followed with a single to bring in Tom
Williams who was running for Taylor.
AFTER PAUL ROLLINS retired Georgia Southern
with a sensational diving catch in the seventh inning.
Carraway started Carolina's two-run inning with a
homerun. After Curl's line shot single, Boatwright
layed down a sacrifice bunt to advance Curl to
second. Thaw slashed a double down the right field
line and Curl slid under the tag at the plate to give the
Cocks a 5-1 lead.

"I've been doing bad the last month, but everybody
has been telling me to hang in. Now everything is
starting to come aioUnd," Landrum said. "We've
had great fan support, and that really means a lot.
And now we're getting key hits."
"I'm real proud of Bill Landrum. Lately he's been
having a tough time. But he did a fine job today,"
Coach June Raines said following the win.
EAGLE COACH Jack Stallings replaced Kilimonis
with Phil Leisure in the eighth inning. Jonson started
the offensive fireworks by lining to right field.
"Farkie" singled up the middle, but the centerfielder
fumbled the ball and "Farkie" raced to second and
Jonson to third. Hollins walked to load the bases
before Carraway doubled to right field, scoring
Jonson and Farquharson. After Curl and Boatwright
popped out, Hollins scored on a wild pitch for the final
run of the game.
"You have to feel good anytime you beat a Georgia
Southern team. They're a tough team," Raines said.
"We've got eight tough games left. We'll just have
to play them daily. I feel good about a NCAA bid,"
Raines added.
Friday night the Gamecocks defeated Georgia
Southern 7-4 in the opening game of the weekend
series.
Freshman Joe Kucharski was the winning pitcher
and upped his record to 4-0. Bobby Kish took the
mound in the sixth and recorded his fourth save.
HOLLINS ANI) CL'KL each had two-run homers in
the first inning. Hollins now has seven homeruns on
the year, and Curl has 11. Keith "Redlight" Taylor
hit his second homerun of the season in the eighth
inning before a standing room only crowd.
The Gamecocks travel to Macon, Ga., this afternoon
to take on Mercer College. Carolina split a
two game series with the Bears two weeks ago.
