It was more than just a rock 'n' roll concert ? it
represented hope for the future. In the middle of the
Nuclear State, on a blue Sunday (when alcohol is
supposedly not consumed), a white female singer
lashed out against the use of nuclear power. Bonnie
Raitt and the Nighthawks set the crowd on fire at the
USC Annual Spring Outdoor Concert.
Under a beautiful sunny South Carolina sky, people
danced and partied together as musicians played
ineir nearts out. The Nighthawks, in their third
performance here, proved that they are one of the
most exciting R&B bands around. Bonnie also took a
liking to them as she brought Jim Thackery and
Mark Werner up on stage to join her band. The result
was astounding.
In front of the largest crowd ever assembled at a
Spring Concert, Bonnie let us know she is one of the
best rock 'n' rollers in the country. An active member
of M.U.S.E. (Musicians United for Safe Energy), she
is begging to acquire the popularity she deserves.
She is not gaining respect ? because her music is

as good as it has been in the past ? but because she is
using the opportunities to tell her fans that a change
is in order or states like South Carolina will soon glow
in the dark.
The behavior of the audience was commendable. If
that many people can come together and consume
large amount of alcohol without any major disturbances,
it proves how ridiculous the blue laws are.

GI->w. She sang several songs from the album, including
a funky version of Isaac Hayes-David Porter's
"I Thank You." She has an amazingly relaxed
stage presence that generates crowds into wild
frenzies.
The concert, which was sponsored by Contemporary
Sounds, was a perfect example of what
rock 'n' roll is all about. If people would put as much
energy into the movement against nuclear power as
they do into partying, as Bonnie said on stage,
"Maybe next year we can power our amplifiers with
our good friend up there (the sun)."
