A measure that would eliminate
about 17 Daee positions in the S C.
Senate would affect many USC
students.
Aiken Sen. Gilbert McMillan
introduced an amendment to the
$1.7 billion appropriations bill that
would reduce the number of
legislative pages by 25 percent, but
that number has been trimmed to
10 percent.
THE REASON for that cut,
McMillan said, is to set an example
tor organizations ana companies
having to make economic cutbacks.
"When you ask people to do
something, you've got to set an
example. When a legislative body
asks other businesses to cut back,
we've got to begin by looking in our
own backyard," he said. "There
are an awful lot of extra people
around that are not tied to any
specific duties. The cut wouldn't
hurt anybody this year, but we'll

THE S. C. General Assembly has
more than 300 pages, with about
170 in the Senate and about 140 in
the House. A great majority of
those pages are USC students,
according to senate clerk Jim
Fields. Page duties include running
errands and handling other
menial tasks of the legislators for
an average salary of $1600 a
session.
Each House member is allowed
one page appointment as a part of
his patronage privilege, but the
system of appointing pages in the
Senate is less defined. Appointments
are based on a number
of factors, including funds controlled
by the individual senator
and his seniority, Fields said.
"We try to hold Me number down
