State Wolfpack. It was the Gamecocks first loss in the region, but it appears that will be enough as Clemson and the Wolfpack now have better records than Carolina. "It was an even match obviously at 5-4," coach Ron Smarr said. "I think we had a few lapses in some of the matches that really hurt us." The Gamecocks split their singles winning at numbers one, three and six. The top match of the day was at the number-one spot where Gamecock Arthur Anastopoulo defeated Andy Andrews 7-6, 4-6, 6-4. "THIS IS A big win for Artie," Smarr said. "This puts him in the top 64, which qualifies him for the NCAA singles competition. Andrews is the top ranked player in the region this year. This is only the second match he's lost." Anastopoulo was happy to make the NCAA singles competition, but says it was not his number-one priority. The Tigers took the first game 9-6 by scoring six unearned runs in the eighth inning, and then completed the sweep over the Gamecocks with a 4-3 victory at Clemson. In the second game, Clemson took the lead early, with two runs in the bottom half of the first inning off of Gamecock starter Dennis Lubert. Lubert, who lost his first game of the season, did not pitch badly, giving up three runs on six hits in five innings of work.
