BEST ACTOR: The two best

Reynolds in Starting Over and
Nick Nolte In North Dallas Forty)
were not nominated, leaving
Academy members to make do
with performances #3 through 07:
Dustin Hoffman in Kramer, Jack
Lemmon in The China Syndrome.
A i r acino in ... *na justice for All
Roy Schieder in All That Jazz and
Peter Sellers in Being There. I
prefer Sellers, but Hoffman looks F
to be unbeatable. j
BEST ACTRESS: Only here did
the Academy nominate the person
most deserving of the statuette: ;
Sally Field, for her performance in !
Norma Rae. The soon-to-be-losers \
are Jill Clayburgh for Starting ,
Over, Jane Fonda for The China
Syndrome, Marsha Mason for
Chapter Two and Bette Midler for
The Rose.
I
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR:
rne only major race tnat is a race;
features Melvyn Douglas in Being
There, Robert Duvall in!
Apocalypse Now, Frederic Forrest
in The Rose, Justin Henry in
Kramer and Mickey Rooney in The
Black Stallion. Duvall was the only ^
thing that made Apocalypse ?
watchable and the Academy may
give him the award because it
doesn't want Coppola's $32 million
folly to go away empty-handed.
Then again, it may give Duvall the
statuette because his performance
was the best of the five nominees.
Smart money, however, is riding
on Douglas, who has the sentimental
vote. Of the two, I prefer
Duvall, but I predict Douglas to
win.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS:
The nominees are Jane
Alexander in Kramer, Barbara
Barrie in Breaking Away, Candice
Bergen in Starting Over, Mariel
Hemingway in Manhattan(l) and
Meryl Streep in Kramer. I liked
Bergen's performance the best,
but Streep can't lose.
BEST ORIGINAL SONG:
Neither "Better Than Ever" from
Starting Over nor the title songs
from The Main Event and The
Rose were nominated, so who
cares what wins? Of those
nominated ("It Goes Like it Goes"
from Norma Rae, "The Rainbow
Connection" from The Muppet
Movie, "It's Easy to Say" from 10,
"Through the Eyes of Love" from
Ice Castles and "I'll Never Say
Goodbye" from The Promise). I
like "It Goes Like it Goes
[THE HILLS]
