A hoax has been perpetrated on
America by the Academy of
iviouon nciure /\ris ana sciences.
The nominations for the 52nd
annual Academy Awards, announced
Feb. 25 in Beverly Hills,
were phonies. The true
nominations were made public
only last week in an effort to make
the votes received prior to thai
time void, so that the select feu
who knew of the fluke could
railroad their selections into the
winner's circle
BY FAR, the most controversial
category in this year's true
nominations is for the best per
formance by an actress in a
leading role. Perennial nominee
Talia Shire (who is rumored to be a
leading contender for a 1981 Oscar
for her role as a mousey young twil
who is terrorized by a lesbian ir
Gordon Willis' Windows) swept the
category, with three of the total
five nominations.
Miss Shire was honored for her
searing portrayals of a mousey
young twit in love with a boxer ir

Picture of 1979 are Americathon,
The Champ, The Villain and the
two roller-disco movies,
Skatetown, U.S.A., and Roller
Boogie.
It's generally acknowledged that
had a single roller-disco movie
been nominated, it would have won
hands down, but oddsmakers are
predicting a split vote which will
enable The Champ to take the
award. Americathon and The
Villain both are considered, as are
most comedies, to be too lightweight
for such a prestigious
award. Also, since The Champ is
likely to be shut out in the
remainder of its record 16
nominations, the Academy is apt to
give it the Best Picture award just

Well, those could just as well be
the year's nominees, what with
WnnHv Allan's masrnifirpnt
Manhattan being virtually ignored
and Alan Pakula's Starting Over
gaining only token nominations for
Best Actress (Jill Clay burgh) and
Best Supporting Actress (Candice
Bergen).
Since many of this year's
nominees are mediocre at best, the
job of picking the winners seems
like a relatively easy thing to do.
To wit, here are my predictions
and preferences for the 1980
Academy Awards:
BEST PICTURE: The nominees
are Alt That Jazz, Apocalypse
Now, Breaking Away, Kramer vs.
Kramer and Norma Rae. Kramer
should win, and, of the nominees, it
deserves to. If, God forbid,
A nnrnlunso shnnlH win thpr#? will
be nothing left for Hollywood to do
but declare itself a monarchy and
offer Francis Coppola the crown.
