'New Crucib
To the Editor:
We, the campus members of the
Society of Professional Journalists,
Sigma Delta Chi, are
deeDlv disturbed hv the Student
Allocations Commission's
rejection of The New Crucible's
budget request for 1981.
The unreasonable budget cuts
will destroy a fine new magazine.
We say "new magazine" because
the publication has been completely
revised from its old format.
Yet, SAC has not given it a
chance to prove itself. One year is
not nearly enough time to judge a
magazine's success; it is barely
enough time to build a readership.
SAC felt that the articles "did not
sufficiently meet the needs of USC
students." Whyrshould SAC be in a
position to decide that The New
Crucible is not serving the main
interests of students? Would SAC
care to set a criterion for meeting
students' needs?
All of the articles presented in
the past were pertinent to the
campus, its people and problems.

crime, drug abuse, and the gas
shortage (all subjects of past
articles) are immaterial and inconsequential.
If SAC would look
closer, it would find that The New
Crucible is not just fiction or
poetry.
As responsible journalists
concerned about keeping the
public informed, we feel obligated
to defend an important voice of the
students. It is sadly ironic that one
of the best journalism schools ir
the South will not have a single
magazine.

entertain the students.
A newspaper and radio station 1
are limited in their story depths, ho
SAC is only hurting itself and th<
gypping the students by denying de
the magazine funding, and by
sentencing it to a premature death.
It is evident that SAC prefers to
allocate money to new clubs, such
