Census to include
on-campus students

The federal government will count on-campus college students in
aiviauany instead of as members of households in the 1980 census, said
Rosalin Atkinson, census special places operations supervisor.
Atkinson said individual census questionnaires will be distributed
nationwide to on-campus students to determine their number for
statistical purposes. These individual census forms are used to count
Americans who are not members of a regular household.
THE CENSUS COUNT is based on where you spend most of your
time," Atkinson said. "The regular census form asks if there is anyone
from that household who is away at college."
Atkinson said the on-campus students will be counted only once when
they fill out their individual forms. The short census forms will be

out and turn them in at their main dorm desk by tomorrow.
ALTHOUGH THE ORIGINAL plan was to distribute census forms
today, some students received them as early as Monday. Atkinson said
this is because enumerators decided to start earlier.
As far as the government is concerned, it wants a count of the number
of students living on college campuses across the country, and how
many members of each racial or ethnic group are in this category.
The short census form is designed primarily not only for on-campus

permanent residence.
The first side of the form asks the respondent his name and
residential status. If the student answers a certain question in that
category, he is asked to turn to the reverse side.and answer questions
concerning sex, race or nationality, month and year of birth, marital
status and if they are of Hispanic origin and what type (Cuban, Puerto
Rican,etc.).
ATKINSON SAID STUDENTS will have to go as far as the question
asking residential status, where they will answer that they are oncampus
students. They will not have to answer any more questions on
the form, she said.
