appeassed Iranians

The Washington editor of the United Press International bureau has
accused the U.S. government of allowing aliens to cross the nation's
borders in an attempt to appease the Iranian government.
Ron Cohen spoke at a meeting of the USC chapter of Sigma Delta Chi,
the Society of Professional Journalists, March 27 and said "There is
tacit approval (of allowing Iranian immigrants easy access into the
U.S.) solely because the American government does not want to upset

UPI WORKERS spent nine hours at the Kennedy International Airport
in New York and observed immigrants from Iran gaining entry
into the United States more easily than American citizens returning
from foreign vacations, Cohen said.
"We saw one(Iranian) get in without a visa carrying 8 x 10 black and
white photos of Iran," he said. The photos depicted a long, narrowing
hallway with gas masks in front of doors. When an attempt was made to
turn the pictures over to the FBI, the photos were refused by the

President Carter maintains United States borders are carefully
monitored, Cohen said, but "This is obviously not true. Iranians with
field manuals on how to manufacture bombs and clean weapons passed
through immigration and no effort was made to turn them away at the
borders," Cohen said.
COHEN SAID UPI is not the most financially affluent wire service,
but it has been covering the 1980 presidential campaign extensively.
A year before the elections, UPI assigned a reporter to each major
and minor presidential candidate and developed detailed 1200 word
stories on each man.
Sen. Edward Kennedy has no money for a presidential campaign,
Cohen said. UPI covered Kennedy for nearly four months and he was
"kind of funny," Cohen said. "One day he's a spellbinder, and some
days he's discombobulated." he said.
"I think if Kennedy wanted to complain, he'd have a good case
against the press. There have been some real hatchet jobs on him,"
Cohen said. "He's just like vevery other candidate."
RONALD RKAGAN has been giving the same speech for 10 years.
uonen said. "II Keagan keeps going he'll have the same name as his
party, grand and old," he said.
Much of the campaign news has to be carefully analyzed because
minor faults are over-reported. Cohen said. He said he could not predict
who will win the presidency because "It's that kind of year."
