Mixed results for
men's tennis team
on California trip I

While most USC students were basking in the sun, the Carolina men's
tennis team was hard at work in Carlifornia. They played some of the
too tennis teams in thp ronntrv with mivoH

The netters opened up their spring tour on a sour note when they were
defeated by 20th ranked San Diego State 6-3. Trevor Raal and Chuck
Hodgin were the only singles winners for the Gamecocks.
The Gamecocks bounced back strong with a 6-3 victory over unranked
Long Beach State the next day. USC won four singles matches and two
doubles matches in the contest.
The USC team ran into a buzzsaw when they went up against fifth
ranked Pepperdine. They were defeated 7-2. Trevor Raal and Chuck
Hodgin again were the only singles winners for the team, but the match
was closer than the score sounds with two other matches going three
sets and to match point.
UNDEFEATED and top ranked UCLA was the next foe the
Gamecocks faced. UCLA also proved to be a formidable opponent when
they picked up a 6-3 victory. Trevor Raal and Brian McDonald were
Carolina's singles winners. McDonald and Peter MacDonald teamed up
for the final victory in doubles. UCLA remained undefeated on the
season while tfte Gamecocks dropped to 15-5.
The next stop on the tour was Santa Barbara. USC proved up to the
challenge picking up a 7-2 victory. The Gamecocks were forced to play
without the services of number-one player Arthur Anastopoulo when he
injured his back in a match the day before.
USC had another strong match when they defeated the University of
Carolifornia 9-0 to even up the spring tour mark at 3-3. The contest was
highlighted by a strong match from Peter MacDonald at the numberone
position. MacDonald took over for the injured Anastopulo for the
second straight day.
THE GAMECOCKS play traditional rival Clemson Saturday afternoon
in Clemson. The Tigers are currently ranked 11th in the
country and are coming off strong wins over Georgia and UNC. They
are 28-4 on the season. This is a crucial match for Carolina because they
need to defeat all the teams in their region to be sure of an NCAA invitation.
