The Memphis Blues Caravan

than two hundred. It was more or
less a successj more because of
Memphis Piano Red and the King
Biscuit Boys and less because of
Furry Lewis.
LEWIS, WHO played second, has
had his playing abilities impaired
by age, such that his playing
bordered on incompetence. This
detracted from the impact of the

Memphis Piano Red opened
with a program mixing rags,
stride, blues and boogie-woogie.
He proved an excellent exponent of
several styles of roadhouse piano
music. Memphis Piano Red played
seven tunes, among them "Shake
That Thing," "Early One Morning,"
"Pine Top's Boogie," and
"After Hours." He seemed a little
out of his depth with "After
Hours;" at times he obscured the
tempo, leaving one lost until he
reached the tag at the end of each
chorus.
AFTER BEING helped to the
stage by an attendant, a frail l
looking Furry Lewis followed j
with a thoroughly disappointing ]
set. He started badly and got 1
worse; he made no attempt to <
chord with his left hand, doing I
strictly slide work, producing a 1
strummed and discordant sound, s

was the only indication of the 12
bar blues; the guitar work largely

Lewis' set covered ten tunes,
among them "Farewell
McKinley" and "Will the Circle be
Unbroken."
AFTER INTERMISSION, the/
King Biscuit Boys followed. This
trio played an excellent electric
blues set greatly modeled after the
B.B. King sound. The set was
highlighted by the guitar artistry
of Fred "Guitar" Sanders, who
also did a fine job handling the bulk
of the vocal duties. About halfway

by harpist Sonny Blake. He played
some fine blues harp, despite his
obviously growing disinterest as
the set progressed, displayed by
frequent glances at his watch.
At the end, Sanders stated that
the group usually plays country
gigs. "We like to reach
everybody," he said. Then, as if to
demonstrate their versatility, they
went into a rousing version of
"Beer Barrel Polka," which had
the audience singing along in

returned and joined in handflapping.
It was an odd closing to a
blues concert, though one which
the obviously satisfied audience
seemed to enjoy.
