There is a new artist on the scene
that will, in time, be considered <
one of the greatest female i
vocalists in rock 'n' roll. Her name <
is Carolyne Mas. <
Mas, a native New Yorker, is a *
sensation on stage. She has an air J
of confidence that is amazing to ?
find in such a young performer. I
She is not arrogant. She is just
relaxed and confident. I
My first and only exposure to j
Carolyne Mas live came in I
February at the NECAA convention
in Washington. In the
coffee house showcase, Carolyne
stole the show.
HER BAND consists of: David
Landau, guitars and vocals;
Robbie Kondor, keyboards;
Crispin Cioe, saxophones; John
Siegler, bass; and Andy Newmark
on drums.
i ne Dana is extremely ugni ana
packed with energy. Landau and
Cioe are the standouts. They interchange
leads with amazing
ease, as if they've been playing
together forever.
In ROLLING STONE magazine
described her as having a sound
similar to Bruce Springsteen. If
having meaningfull lyrics, an
energetic voice and a saxophone in
a band makes an artist sound like
Springsteen, then she does. But
she is actually a unique performer
who plays rock 'n1 roil with a touch
of class.
Her songs have a steady beat
with guitar and piano solos, interwoven
carefully rather than
banged out, as many new performers
feel they must do.
GETTING HER START at the
Other End in Greenwich Village in
New York City, she quickly gained
critical acclaim. Soon after, radio
siaiions Degan playing her demo
tapes and getting great response.
. Her background in music is
versitile-voice lessons, jazz, folk
and rock. She attended the
American Music arid Dramatic
Academy on Bleeker Street in
Greenwich Village. She was accepted
at Julliard but decided to
perform at a folk festival rather _
than attend classes.

either wrote or co-wrote all of the
>ongs. It is a well produced album
and contains a variety of music
and styles, making good use of the
:alented musicians in the band.
Side one opens with a song that is
top-forty material, not because its
garbage like most top hits, bul
because it contains a great beat
with a catchy saxophone line.

she can rock with the best of them
and calm down and sing love songs

more people see her live. She's
already making big waves in the
Northeast.
