The Palmetto Poison Center has been formed at USC to provide South Carolinians with poison antidote information and educational programs. The center was dedicated March 16 and is a united effort of USC and Richland Memorial Hospital. "Working together as the Palmetto Poison Center, our goals are to reduce the number of accidental poisonings through public education programs, to assure that all South Carolinians have quick anu easy access 10 poison information and to assure that quality treatment is available when a poisoning occurs," said Dr. Brooks Metts, director of the poison center. LJ11I.UI1 seeking office By Pat McCarthy Gamecock Staff Writer William D. Bilton hopes to help reorganize the S.C. Young Democrats Association if elected president of the organization. INCU !Y1 B E N T P B ESIDE N T Eric Carr is not seeking reelection. Elections will take place Saturday at South of the Border in Dillion County. Bilton said he would like to solve the problems of effectiveness and awareness toward Young Democrats on a state and local level. "People don't know who we are or what we do. Things we've done haven't been totally adequate in the past. We need to add a backbone," said Bilton. "We want to broaden our base and get more people involved. However, we can't do much until we're financially sounu." TO BILTON, the purpose of Young Democrats is to help elect democrats because the organization is directly affiliated with the Democratic Party. Party rules prohibit endorsing any particular candidate until the primaries are over. Bilton is now president of USC's branch of Young Democrats, which has about 120 active members. Every county, college or university is eligible to have a Young Democrats club. Assuring that each does and is active is a big problem, according to Bilton. Basically, Bilton feels that Young Democrats handle "the leg work" for the Democratic Party. They are the volunteers who initially get people to register to vote and then to the polls on election day. Young Democrats also distribute reading materials and handle phone banks One activity Young Democrats get involved with is sponsoring voter registration drives. This means setting up mobile units and knocking on doors to get people registered to vote.
