I'm afraid I must respond to
Karen Geney's last article. The
statements made by L B. Hebbard
are in conflict with present
evidence. If Barnwell is a "clean"
and "low level" storage facility,
then why is a federal grand jury
investigating facts that claim the
opposite?

become aware of a "Greek slate"
for Constitutional office. Letters,
containing the preferences of some
Greeks, are circulating on campus.
Proposed candidates on this
"Greek Slate" are: TONY
TURNER, President; JEFF
FLOYI), Vice President; BARBARA
DERRICK, Treasurer.
Though Floyd and Derrick are nonGreeks,
they are described as
friends of the Greeks who have
always supported and worked for
the Greeks.
We vehemently denounce and
object to the attempt by any group
to sponsor a slate for Student
Government office. As members of
"Students for Fair Student
Government," we feel no special
interest group should be allowed
special preference or con
sideration over the needs of the
students as a whole.
We believe that Student
Government should be open
minded to ALL students, and the
formation of a "Greek Slate goes
against the principles of free, open,

Michael Lowe, a representative
for the Palmetto Alliance, stated,
"These buried tankers raise the
possibility of liquid wastes leaking
through their packaging and into
the groundwater." As you can see,
Barnwell is "very" concerned
about the water supply.
Claims also were made that
workers were "safe" at Barnwell.
Again evidence refutes this. Lott
stated, "Many Chem-Nuclear
employees received large doses of
radiation. Some received more
exposure than they were allowed.
Others received nearly the
maximum level and then weri
shifted to areas of the company
where they would receive less.
In a few instances, when the
company could find nowhere else
to shift workers with high levels of
radiation exposure, they were

in which special interest groups
could attempt to control Student
Government for their own benefit.

In another instance statements
were made that indicated Barnwell
is a temporary storage
facility. According to Lott, Herbert
Oakley, a former site inspector
who has been promoted, had a
favorite quote: "Once it's down
there it never comes back up."
Lott went on to say, "It was of
common knowledge that once the
shipment was received and
disposed of that was it."
There are so many discrepancies
in Barnwell's propaganda that it's
rather monotonous. Chem-Nuclear
is not "clean, safe," or anything
approaching that. The evidence is
clear, and Chem-Nuclear has, as
yet, failed to produce anything that
would disclaim it.
As citizens of South Carolina we
must become involved in this
issue. It is not a problem that we
can ignore.
