President Jimmy Carter
received 64 percent of the
delegates in Saturday s
Democratic caucus, while
Massachusetts Senator Edward
Kennedy gained only four percent.
Thirty-two percent of the delegates
remained uncommitted.
The uncommitted delegates
represented heavily black districts
like Jasper County, which had a 70
percent uncommitted delegate
vote. Democratic party workers
attributed the black uncommitted
vote to the NAACP's request that
blacks not align themselves with
"unresponsive" candidates.
In Richland County, Carter
gained 647 delegates to Kennedy's
147 and California Governor Jerry
Brown's 5. Carter received 153
delegates to Kennedy's 14 in
Lexington County.

to a candidate, he must support
that candidate at the national
convention unless the candidate
withdraws from the race.
The delegates chosen Saturday
will participate in the county
Democratic convention and
delegates will then be chosen for
the state convention. At the state
convention, 37 delegates to the
Democratic National Convention
will be selected.
Before the caucuses, Kennedy
campaign coordinator Levi
Johnson denied charges by the S.C.
Carter campaign that his candidate
has ignored the South in his
bid for the presidency.
Johnson, assistant state coordinator
for the Kennedy cam
paign, said the senator is not
overlooking the South, although he

the region. "We're not writing off
South Carolina, and we're not
geared toward one particular

small southern states.
Afghanistan and Iran are Carter's
"trump cards," Quackenbush
said. National patriotism in the
face of a crisis has caused Carter's
rise in popularity, he said.
Kennedy's stances on various
issues have led the American
people to view him as unpatriotic,
Quackenbush said. "The unpatriotic
noose put around his
(Kennedy's) neck was unfortunate
and unwarranted," Johnson said.
Quackenbush believes the public
views Kennedy as a beatable
opponent for the Democratic
nomination. "The day Teddy
Kennedy announced, he became a
^mortal again." Quackenbush said.
