Computer problems caused a delay in the announcement
of the results of Tuesday's Student
Government elections.
This year's balloting was done without the-use of
voting booths because of their use in Saturday's
Republican Primary. A computer system,
programmed by USC Computer Services, was used j
and results should have been available by 10 p.m. I

S(i PRESIDENT PETER Haesoker said all information
had been entered into the computer, but a
problem within the system had made it impossible
for total votes to be read out. Because of the size of
the computer system, the problem was difficult to

paper caught in the machine could be a factor, he
said.
"We really don't know anything," Haeseker said,
"it is out of our hands, but we'll be working on it all
night."
Paul Reeves, elections commissioner, said a
professional election programmer offered to handle
the voting system, but the price he asked was "much
higher than we could afford." The Elections Com
mission had the choice of using Computer Services or
hand ballots.
Haes^ker said hand ballots would have increased
the possibility of error in vote tabulation. Reeves said
the system used was successful in that only 32
mistakes were made on the computer ballot sheets.
REEVES SAID NO decision has been made concerning
Thursday's planned run-off election. "We
can't say anything right now because there are many
questions that need to be answered, not only this
(program malfunctioning)." Reeves would not say
what the problems in question were.
