Sigma Chi triumphs
in Boxing Classic

Punches flew and blood was spilled at the third annual Lambda Chi
Alpha Boxing Classic finals Thursday night at Memorial i
Auditorium. When it was over, three Sigma Chi fighters had won
their bouts and helped their fraternity capture tne team iropny.
Clay Wright, Lou Onorato and John Madden all won for Sigma Chi.
Wright won on a forfiet, while Onorato and Madden came out strong
and won in very physical matches.

Van Watson of Chi Psi could not continue in the fight and gave
Onorato the decision on a TKO. i
Madden also came out strong,knocking Joe Rabon of Kappa Sigma
to the floor in the opening minutes of the first round. But Madden
tired and could not put Rabon away and had to settle for a final round
decision.
Onorato was named Most Valuable Player in the tournament for
his outstanding performance. Kenny Jones ol Sigma Nu was tne
runner-up for the MVP honor.
Pi Kappa Phi placed second and Kappa Sigma came in third in the
team competition that featured two nights of preliminary action
before the nine bouts Thursday night. j
The other winners in the finals included Don Weatherbee of Phi
Delta Theta who used good form to move, dip and connect against a
bigger John Collins of ZBT in taking a decision and Brian Rej of Phi j
Delta Theta who took a narrow final round decision over Nick
Powers at the 136-pound level. Rej was also awarded the trophy for
Best Sportsmanship in the classic.
BRUCE FRIDDLE of Phi Kappa Sigma won a solid decision over
Joe Schwartz of Pi Kappa Phi in the 156-pound bout and Walt Goins of
tvappa Sigma won oy iorieu in inesixm ngni 01 mi evening. {
Kenny Jones of Sigma Nu made quick work of Steve Yauger of
SAE in the seventh bout, knocking him out in just seconds. Yauger
went down to the canvas after a flurry of Jones' shots connected, but
did later manage to get up under his own power.
John Bailey of Sigma Nu won the 186-pound bout over Bobby Hall
of Pi Kappa Phi. Bailey knocked Hall down in the opening seconds of
the first round and Hall's trainers immediately threw in the towel to
stop the fight.
This was the third annual event, which is open to the members of
USC's 16 social fraternities. The proceeds from the tournament will
be donated to the South Carolina Brown Lung Association and the
Columbia Boxing Club. In past years, the Boxing Classic raised
$1,100 for the Police Athletic League and the Columbia Youth Boxing
Club. It is not yet known how much money was raised from this
year's event.
