To the Editor:
In representation of the majority
of students at USC, we feel that the
reasons given for dropping
gymnastics from a varsity sport to
a club are absurd!
As present USC gymnasts, we
know that the reasons given are
definitely false statements. We
nave oeen told personally by
President Holderman that the
reasons for eliminating gymnastics
as a varsity sport are: 1.
insufficient funds in the athletic
department to continue gymnastics,
2. the lack of competition
within the state, 3. the safety involved
in gymnastics.
If there is not enough funds
available in the athletic department,
why are they replacing
gymnastics with golf? Common
sense would lead you to believe

against at least once during the
season and many within the
surrounding states, such as North
Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee.
More than half of our meets this
year were at home, which is more
than most of our varsity sports.
When President Holderman
refers to the safety of gymnastics,
one would naturallv assume that
he is inferring that gymnastics is a

If that's the case, all sports
should be changed to a club for all
sports have a certain amount of
danger involved in them.
Therefore, we should get in touch
with the Olympic Committee and
inform them on how dangerous this
sport is so they too may discontinue
gymnastics as an Olympic
event, for fear that they will have a
pile of broken bones on their hands.
