"For the last several years student government hasn't had a fighter; they've had diplomats. I'm a * V - 1 V ti very controversial person on campus, anu i can i deny that. But I'm a fightef and I fight from the heart," Scalera said. Scalera, a graduate student from New Jersey, was a student senator for two years and a supreme court justice last year. While in the senate, he chaired the judiciary and fire safety and communications committees. He said he has also been "a general Unnrlirtvinn or/\nn^ />omnnc " naiiujman ai vunu \.auipuo. A MAJOR CONCERN in this year's election is student apathy, Scalera said, but he doesn't think it would be a problem in his administration. "When it comes to me, student apathy ends," he said. "I'm a Ted Kennedy - you either love me or you hate me." Scalera said he is interested in presenting some new ideas and issues during his election, avoiding what he called "the same old trash" his opponents nra* are discussing. Tnnu 1 H * III The student government president must make "the policy makers realize that without the students: they would be out of a job," Tony Turner, candidate for SG president, said. "Too many times, until this year, the students have elected a president who is not qualified and not diplomatic," Turner said. Turner said he plans to continue many of the programs that this year's president has started. Turner said he would continue looking for solutions to the parking situation and the athletic seating problem. He also said he would work on programs that SG president Pete Haeseker has started but couldn't finish because he "just didn't have enough time.-" TURNER SAID IT is important to have first-hand contact with different organizations. Through this he could find out what the students are thinking and what they wat SG to do for them. As president, Turner would send a "student government awareness packet" to each student. This packet would outline the role of student government. It would also contain applications for different j university committees. dential Car David SG Vice Presidential candidate David Clegg said his main efforts in his years in the Senate have been toward clarifying and simplifying the role of student government. "I've seen life at Carolina from a lot of different perspectives and I've seen the same problem: a complete unawareness of student government," Clegg said. "Either students don't, care or they're blocked in their efforts to find out." Clegg said he has been in the Senate twice as long as both of his opponents and has introduced twice as many bills, all of which have been passed. BILLS THAT HE has introduced have included the establishment of the Student Advocate Program, and a requirement of the Student Supreme Court to publish understandable opinions. Also, Clegg said he introduced ine freedom of Information Act that opened all senate committees to public scrutiny. Clegg said he doesn't foresee any problems of working with the administration if elected to the office of vice president. "If you rationalize with people they'll go with you. If you can rationalize with any administrative branch you can work with them. Being on the judicial advisory board, which is a presidential commission, has already given me experience in dealing with the administration," Clegg said. "They've worked with me long enough to know tha t I'm no pushover." With the elimination of SAC. II v ? * ? ? t calera He suggested that student government look into the possibility of widening Bull and Sumter streets and installing diagonal parking facilities to help alleviate the campus parking problem. A RAISE IN student activities fees of about $10 would be proposed by Scalera in an attempt to help the funding of new clubs. Also, he suggested the institution of a student house commission to investigate various complaints. To alleviate security problems on campus, Scalera said that campus police and city police should work with the dormitory governments to place identification marks on students' valuables in case of theft. "I know there are some legal technicalities with all these ideas, but I'm going to make an honest effort to try and get something done." Scalera said. Scalera advocates the permanent closing of Greene Street, and he said he believes the real issue is finding out what students would like to put in that blocked-off area. He suggested the construction of an amphitheater in a little mall. Another issue that Scalera said needed final reform next year is the system of ticket distribution for the Clemson and Georgia football games. He said he believes the pickup should be handled entirely by SG and moved to the Carolina Coliseum where lines could form at the individual box office windows based on the student ID numbers. SCALERA EXPRESSED some concern over the influence of the administration playing a large role in decisions of student government, but said he wouldn't be bothered by it. r? i urner Turner also stressed the importance of getting students involved in SG. He thinks some kind of incentive is needed to get students to vote. Turner mentioned the possibility of perhaps a "monetary rebate" to each student who votes. As a student senator Turner has nronoseri thrpp bills which have all been passed by the senate. One bill established guidelines for cheerleader selection, another set up the SG senator awareness program to enable districts to get to know the representative from their district. TURNER ALSO INTRODUCED a bill allowing the current SG president to appoint half the members of university committees for the year after he leaves office. Turner was the chairman of the powers and responsibility committee, a member of the athletic committee and the rules committee as a senator this vpar J ? Turner said he doesn't think he'll have any problem being influenced by President Holderman or the administration because "I am a student and I share the same concerns as the students.'' Turner is a sophomore majoring in Finance. ididates "THE FINANCE COMMITTEE is going to be in charge of handling $452,000. If you elect a vice president that does not have experience, that does not have broad-based support, that has a special allegiance to a special interest group, you're going to get people on that committee who are going to give a slanted view," he said. The problem of campus security is of major concern to Clegg, and he suggested the institution of a more extensive training nrr?i?r?m fnr r?nmniic as well as the recruitment of younger, more "vibrant" security personnel. The system of distributing student tickets for the football games is also an area that will require additional investigation to determine a more effective way of distribution, Clegg said. "We either have to work with a system akin to the one we have or have a first-come first-serve system, which in my opinion is barbaric," he said. "We presently have a very workable way.
