Up to 14 apartment units on
South Marion Street will become
an "International Villiage" for
USC and international students
next fall, Phil Ives, director of
International Services said.
The new program will enable '
American students to live with t
students from other countries who 2
are learning English as a second
language. (
"THE PURPOSE of this ]
program is two-fold," Ives said. ]
"It will give American students the (
opportunity to see other cultures in
action, and give foreign students
the opportunity to learn American
culture first hand and also to
practice their English."
The apartments, located behind
the Koost, are owned bv USC
housing, and five of the 14 units are
already rented by international
students. Next fall, all of the
apartments will hopefully be
turned over to the international
students. Virginia Thornton,
graduate assistant for housing for
the Office of International Services
said.
In the fall the two-and four
person apartments will each house
one American student and one or
three international students,
Thornton said.
American students will be
recruited for the program this
month for next fall, Ives said.

"This is a unique educational
opportunity for USC students, but
it is also out of the ordinary," Ives
5aid. It will require an outgoing,
committed person and impose
certain demands on the student, he
added.
TO BE ELIGIBLE for the
program, a student must be at USC
for at least one year, have a
minimum 2.5 cummulative GPR,
show an interest in other cultures,
have an outgoing personality and
agree to remain in the program for
at least one vear, Thornton said.
The Office of International
Services will accept applications
and conduct interviews for interested
students. A screening
committee of four people will
chose the 14 American students for
the program, Thornton said.
The international students involved
in the program will be both
graduate students and students
who have just arrived in the
country and who are studying
English intensively for one
semester, Thornton said.
The cost of the apartments will

students to "live abroad at USC,"
and should be very helpful for the
students who plan to study abroad

beneficial to students involved in
anthropology, ioreign ianguages
