The air outside Francis Marion
Gym was well below the freezing
mark Saturday night, but it was
still warmer than the ice cold
shooting of the Clemson Tigers.
The Lady Gamecocks took advantage
of the sudden chill in the
air as they trounced Clemson 80-65
to win the state championship for
the third year in a row.
By combining a quick man-toman
defense, 82 percent shooting
from the foul line and a superior
performance by Sheila Foster,
Carolina was able to beat the
Tigers for the second time this
year.
The wide margin does not even
begin to describe the first half of
play during which the lead
changed hands several times and
the game began to look
reminiscent of last year's state
finals where Carolina edged out
Clemson by one point in the final
seconds.

were called for walking several

The saving breath for the Lady
Gamecocks though was the free
throws. Shooting 88.8 percent from
the line during the first half,
Carolina connected on several key
free throws which tied the game
and finally helped put them out in
front.
With Carolina holding only a six
point lead at halftime, it looked as
though the game could go either
way unless one team played exceptionally
well in the second half
to break the match open
According to Cynthia Jacobs,
pulling themselves together was
the key for the Lady Gamecocks.
"We started playing really good
defense toward the end. Our shots
were falling, we were being patient
on the offense and were getting the
ball to the open player and Sheila
was hot. She just played an innrorliKln

Tiger to only nine points and four
rebounds. Kennedy did not contain
Foster as well, however, as the G O
sophomore lead the game with 29
points and 14 rebounds.

' EVELYN JOHNSON said that by
overcoming some nervousness at
the start of the game, Carolina was
able to get its defense working.
"We came out a little bit scared, a
little tense,,"Johnson said.
"Second half everybody was more
relaxed and we were able to play
our game. "Once we went back to
the man-to-man everybody did
what they were supposed to. We
played tight, covered our players,
and it worked for us. With our
defense we contained all of their
hot shooters and big inside players.
We just cut them off ."
Coach Pam Parsons agreed that
defense was the key and added that
control of the boards was what the

during the first half and we
couldn't let that happen,"she said.
