Since during the game people do
try to toss a ball through
something that vaguely resembles
a basket, the name of this sport is
"basketball* "obviously a decision
reached after an expensive
government research project.
That such a practical name is used
may not seem very important until
you think of sports such as squash
and cricket.
Actually, only pros get paid for
doing silly things described above.
It's usually easy to distinguish the
three major divisions of basketball;
high school, college and pro.
High school ball is played in tiny,
smelly gyms packed with
screaming kids. College ball is
played in tradition-steeped
fieldhouses packed with rowdy
students. Pro ball is played in
cavernous Ultra-Astrodomes
packed with empty seats.
High school ball is played by the
guy in your math call who can't
quite grasp theconcept of number s. t
College ball is played by the guv in
your history class who never shows
up and is on "independent" study.
Pro ball is played by the guy in all
the beer commercials.

classes like Driver's Ed and ,
Advanced Breathing. College

coaches usually end up being
College coaches and High School
coaches again.
The typical basketball game will
start with something called a jump
ball, although the ball does not
aciuany jump, ine tallest player

the opposing player in the
process. This is called a "foul" or
in extreme cases "assualt and
battery with intent to maim."
After one team or another gets
the ball, they try to "make a
basket," which earns them two
points. I, for one, have never
understood why a team would want
to sit around weaving wicker
baskets together when they could
be playing ball, but there are many
things beyond mv comprehension.
Strategy is important is
basketball. A team may use a
"fast break" style of offense or a
"stall" type offense. The fast
break is one of basketball's most
exciting plays, the "fast" referring
to the speed with which a player
moves downcourt with the ball,
and the "break" referring to the
fact that the player usually breaks
something very important to him
in executing the play, like an arm
or a spine. Basketball, like
baseball, is a "non-contact" snort
