whether Steve's many parallels
with the killer include his
becoming a murderer, as well. I

tically everyone I know who's seen
the film came away with a different
ending from my own.
FRIEDKIN'S MAJOR accomplishment
in the film is his
ability, in conjunction with
cameraman James Contner and
art director Edward Pisoni, to set
up the harrowing milieu in which
the story takes place.
The movie's every frame is
permeated with a wry sort of
cynicism and the settings, at
times, seem as vile and degrading
as anything ever put on celluloid.
In the smarmy barroon scenes, one
can almost smell the scent of stale
perspiration mixing with the
unappetizing aroma of poppers
(amyl nitrate).
Jack Nitzsche's evil-sounding
punk-disco score adds further to
the seaminess of the film, although
one can't help thinking that an
electronically produced score,
similar to the ones composed by
Giorgio Moroder for Midnight
Express and American Gigolo,
would have been more effective in
creating the uneasy feeling desired
in the music of a thriller.

the point where they would become
unwatchable. And in a movie
where so much is unwatchable to
begin with, that could spell death
at the boxoffice, as well as cardiac
arrest among audience members.

Cruising may well be the first
American movie too brutally
honest (not to mention just plain
brutal) for its own good. One might
not enjoy watching it, but one
would be hard pressed to deny the
talent and the technical expertise
that went into making it.
