soccer coach Mark Berson has
recently put the Gamecocks on the
soccer map.
Coach Berson arrived at South
Carolina and has guided the
Gamecock booters to 27 victories
in 36 matches, including an NCAA
bid in 1979 where they were

Success thrives on talent, and
the Gamecocks are no exception.
The wealth of talent the
Gamecocks have had can be seen
in the recent drafting of eight
starters by the major soccer
leagues: the North American
Soccer League (NASD, the
mnerican soccer l,eague (a^li
and the Major Indoor Soccer
League (MISL).
The NASL selected three
Gamecocks with Raymond
Bigliotti being picked by Portland
as the sixth overall selection.
Goalkeeper Paul Turin was
selected as the first player in the
second round by Tulsa after
recording seven shutouts in his two

round pick Brian Winstead was
chosen by New England. He left
the Gamecocks after scoring 33
goals including 10 game-winners in
his two years.
The MISL selected three 1979
Gamecock starters. Turin was the
