New recruits include Amy
Lyons, a power hitter; Debbie
Rohr, a shortstop who can hit and
run well; Shirley Ashburne, a
transfer catcher with a rocket arm
that prevents steals; and Laurie
Jones, a talented third baseman.
Jones will be sharing third base
chores with Bonnie Vena, a returning
senior who is an exceptional
third baseman. Also
returning is All-American
Maureen Ahern.
"This year's team is very strong
defensively and offensively,"
Martino says. "We've been
working on bunting and stealing,
our hitting is great and we're
strong up the middle."
Martino thinks the team will
have a much better record than
last year's 35-11 mark.
"WE HAVE TWO spring
training sessions with top northern
teams," Martino said. "They all
come here to play."
Miami of Ohio, Rutgers, Northwestern
and Northern Illinois
University are among the many
top-ranked teams the Gamecocks
will face in those opening sessions.
The team will travel to the
University of Texas April 17-20 for
an invitational in which they will
compete against strong mid-west
teams.
Towards the end of the season.
USC will play the Orlando Rebels,
one of the top American Softball
Association (ASA) teams in the
country.
"The Rebels come in third or
fourth every year in the ASA
nationals," Martino says. "This
game gets us ready for the college
nationals." L

"KENTUCKY IS developing a
strong fast-pitch team too,"
Martinosaid.
"We've got a tough season
ahead," Martino said. "We're
working to get it together."
Martino encourages spectators
and fans to support the team. The
