Returning four pitchers from last year's 31-16 squad, head coach June Raines thinks his pitching staff will be strong despite the loss of two key players ? Jeff Twitty and Aaron Scott. TwiTTY, WHO developed into Carolina's top relief pitcher last year, was lost to graduation at the end of the season. "We're going to miss Jeff Twitty," Raines said. "He was coming out ot the bullpen in about 28 games last season. He just went to the big league with Kansas City, and he's a big man to miss." Attempting to take Twitty's niace as relievers will be Martin Small and Bobby Kish. According to Haines both Kish and Small pitched well in a practice game last Sunday. "We brought both of them in to relieve, and they threw the ball pretty good," the fourth year Carolina coach said. While Kish and Small take care of relieving, two Carolina veterans will lead the starting pitchers. Junior Brett Baynham, who posted a 3.35 ERA and an 8-1 record last season, and sophomore Dennis Lubert will start for Carolina again 9 this year. j RAINES WILL also call on Bill j Landrum who missed last season due to a fractured knee cap. As a junior Landrum boasted an 8-2 record and a 2.78 ERA. Gordon's pitching status is questionable due to a strained tendon in his elbow, according to Raines. Raines explained that the injury to Gordon's arm is complicated because he's a "slider type pitcher" which puts pressure on the tendon in the ellx>w.
