This is the first in a series of
weekly articles that will explore
various musical forms, solo artists,
musical groups and other
pertinent issues in the world of
contemporary music.
THE SOUND BARRIER was
derived from an examination of
tne Deliet tnat too many people,
including myself, tend to shut
themselves off from certain forms
of music Simply because they are
labeled as one form or another
that is not considered acceptable
by their peers, or that these subject
matters have not been
thoroughly examined.
The Sound Barrier will discuss
the lives and music of various
artists and groups who have made
it to the 'big time.' or are on their
way.
The topic of this week's column
is tne National Entertainment and
Collegiate Activities Association
national convention held in
Washington, D C. last week. The
purpose of the convention was to
allow different entertainment
forms (jugglers, musical groups,
solo performers, comedians, etc.)

establish relations with colleges
across the nation with the ultimate
goal of getting contracts.
THE CONVENTION included
educational sessions on various
subjects relating to programming
and promotion of activities
familiar to campus organizations.
The sessions covered a wide
variety of topics, including
"Promotion and Publicity,"
"Balancing Your Film Series" and
"Resume Writing and Interviewing."
Throughout most of the day one
could stop in the hotel lounge and
enjoy one of two video tape shows
that ran throughout the day. Two
organizations, Films Incorporated/Verve
and Video Tape
Network, sponsored the displays.
The main attraction of the
convention were the Showcases, of
which there were three categories:
Mainstage, Club and Coffeehouse.
Each performer was given 20
minutes to perform, which didn't
supply the audience with a complete
impression.

to perform on the Mainstage.
Despite the poor quality of the
sound system, the band got more
favorable response in the form of
'cooperative buying forms,"
(forms filled out by schools with
the intention of setting up a tour
with that particular band) than
any other band in the Southeastern
part of the country.
THE OVERALL QUALITY of
the entertainment was not as good
as one might expect to find at a
convention of this size. But participants
were treated to such fine
performers as Steve Goodman,
Jonathan Edwards and Jan and
Dean.
Jan and Dean made their name
during the '60s with a sound that is
now familiarized in the music of
the Beach Boys. Jan suffered a
near-fatal accident that left him
partially paralyzed on the right
side of his body. I didn't know how
to react to seeing a man who can
hardly walk try to dance around a
stage and sing. I felt sorry for him,
admired him and thought he was

making a big mistake all in one.
IT IS A GREAT feat for a handicapped
individual to overcome
his handicap and find work. But
appearance, unfortunately, plays a
vital role in the success of a
musician. I wonder if they are not
trying to capitalize on the fact that
he is handicapped.
Some think the organized
aspects of the convention are just a

cover up for the partying and
social activities involved. It was
quite interesting talking with other
students from around the country
and comparing the activities of the
respective schools.
The convention was both
beneficial educationally as well as
socially. Hopefully USC will be
able to host some of this high
quality entertainment in the
