game in both the regulation and
first overtime period, but it wasn't
to be as the Wolfpack finally won
42-39 in two overtimes. Roche's
ankle was kept in a cast for almost
two months afterwards.
"If everybody would have been
healthy and N.C. State would have
froze the ball and still beat us, I
wouldn't have felt as bad," Owens
said. "It was worse this way
because we weren't playing with a
full team. We didn't have a chance
to win or lose it at full strength."

Carolina was eliminated from
further post-season play. At that
time, only one team from each
conference was allowed in the
national championship play-offs.
Also, teams that were hosting
NCAA regionals (which Carolina
was that year) were barred from
participating in any other tournaments.
As a result, the greatest
team in USC's history, did not go to
a post-season tournament.
"That was probably the biggest
frustration I've ever been
through." Cremins said. "I felt we
let coach McGuire down, we let the
people down and most of all we let
ourselves down because I thought

SPORTSCASTER Joe Petty* of
WIS-TV put the entire situation
into perspective several days after
the team had returned to^r
Columbia. He said "The best
basketball season in USC history
ended abruptly. The curtain came
down with a sickening thud. For
this great team, there could be a
next year but no tommorrow. For
the kids who went 25-3, the door to
post-season play was closed and
could not be opened. Yet the agony
of this one defeat should not cloud
the brilliance of the entire season. I
can't think of any one group that
has brought more prestige to the
state of South Carolina. These
young men are not only great
basketball players ? they are
great ambassadors. We must be

athletes but first-class gentlemen.
He was honored as coach of the
year by the New York sport swriters.
To us, Frank McGuire is
the coach of the century. He has
