Three c USC bee By Michelle Burchette Gamecock Staff Writer It was the kind of game home-' town fans enjoy ? fast, exciting and close, but in the end the home team pulls it out in the clutch. The Gamecocks combined smart basketball and a killer instinct to beat Boston University 83-76. Playing a three guard offense, the Gamecocks set out to control the Terrier's unrelenting press and quickness. Acccording to head coach Frank McGuire, implementing the shorter, quicker ! offense was a spur of the moment idea, yet one which played a very important role in the win. "Boston Universitv is a verv I good pressing team and playing three guards was the answer," McGuire said. We had to get the ball inbounds and up the court. We had Cedriek come to meet the ball against the press and then give it back to the guards immediately. They were suprised." Starting with three guards brought Mike Doyle, Kenny Reynolds.and Zam Frederick in to pace the game while Cedriek Hordges and Jim Strickland tied up the middle FREDERICK agreed that stopping Boston's press was the reasoning ' behind the Gamecock's offensive lineup. "We knew their press is 40 minutes and and coach McGuire felt we should go with a smaller line up to handle the pressure." he said. "I think he inserted me because of my offense. I was getting the ball up against the press and adding a little offense to the team." Reynolds wasn't sure that the tall men could've kept up as well against the Terriers as the shorter players did. "We knew they'd be pressing us and going into their running game and we felt with three guards we'd be able to keep up with them, but it turned out they had to keep up with us," he said. "Coach McGuire put me in the middle and told me to handle it," Doyle added. "He told me to dish it off because I had a guard on either side of me since we went with the three guard offense." "This year I haven't had the opportunity to shoot as much with Cedrick scoring a lot of the points and taking most of the shots," Doyle said."I feel I've been pretty unselfish the whole year by sacrificing shots inside. But, tonight I went out there and I knew that maybe if I increased my point production somehow it wouldn't be so close. Using the zone defense, Carolina tried to control Boston's one power shooter, Steve Wright, who was the scoring leader in the game with 27 points and 12 rebounds. "They only had one guy (Wright) who looked to put the ball up," Fredrick said. "He was shooting everything down the floor and we felt like if we could play zone and keep a hand in his face we'd have a good chance of winning the game." Reynolds said weakness in Carolina's man-to-man is one reason they employed the zone against Boston. "Our man-to-man is a little weak and we need to work on it.
