correspondent Carole Simpson
criticized, supported and
questioned the actions of blacks
Friday as part of the Association of
Afro American Students' Black
Week.
Simpson, the first black woman
to break into broadcasting in
Chicago and a correspondent for
NBC since 1974, told an overflow
crowd in Russell House Ballroom
that for her "it was a struggle to
make it" in the broadcasting world
because of her color and sex.
Simpson said while she was employed
in Chicago at radio station
WCFL, she faced a lot of resentment
from her colleagues. "I was
trotted out as a double token," she
said. "I experienced more sex
discrimination than I did racial
discrimination."

"this is the most conservative U.S.
Congress we've seen in this century."
She said she was concerned
about the Washington legislators
spending more money for
''national defense while social
programs such as welfare are
being cut. Before long, we will
have more guns than butter, and
the poor and blacks will feel it."

blacks isn't being heard."
SHE QUOTED Urban League
statistics that said one in three
blacks are supported by welfare,
two black children in five have no
father and one half of all black
children are born out of wedlock, to
which the crowd reacted with
surprise.
Simpson said that blacks should
stop depending on institutions and
the government and rely more on
themselves. She also attacked the
"me" generation. "We've all
gotten selfish," she said. "We want
to do our own thing."
A former nightclub entertainer
and comedian, Gregory told the
audience that "ya'll got a big job to
do," referring to the need for
blacks to wipe out what he termed
"the white racist system" in this
country.

graduation, criticized higher
education in this nation. "You all
go to these white racist institutions
and you feel all comfortable," he
said. "You should be scared."
