Senal By Megan Sexton Gamecock Staff Writer The elimination of the Student Allocations Commission will allow the senate finance committee to hear organizations' budget requests throughout the year and allow more time for appeals by organizations, said Dorothy Stefan, finance committee member. 'The problem this year was that \ve(the finance committee;were told in the fall that we could cut and add to organization's budgets," Stefan said, so the committee cut money from organizational budget allocations. The committee was then told by SAC advisor Doug Bostick it couldn't cut any money because it wouldn't have time to hear appeals, Stefan said."This made the finance committee an ineffective, useless committee because SAC just railroaded allocations through us," she said. If the committee cuts budgets it will have to hear organizational appeals in the spring. Bostick said the new bill, which gives the responsibility of allocating funds for licensed organizations to the student senate, will match the power of the senate with the knowledge of SAC. The finance committee then decides if it will recommend the senate allocate the funds, and the senate votes on the funding request. The new system, which goes into effect July 1, will excude SAC and organizations will go to the finance committee with their proposed budget. The finance committee will present their recommendation to the senate for a vote on the funding allocation. "By taking out one of these steDS (SAC), the senate will have more responsibility and the funds will get to the organizations faster," Bob Stein, finance committee chairman said. Stein introduced the bill to the senate three weeks ago.
