Omega Psi Phi overcame a six
point halftime deficit with a strong
man-to-man defense and a fast
break offense to upset previously
unbeaten and top-ranked Sigma
Nu last week 66-56, in intramural
basketball action.
The win elevates Omega Psi Phi
to the top spot in this week's top 10
rankings. The Ques won the intramural
championship two
seasons ago and occupied the
number-one position for most of
last year.

soccer coach Mark Berson has
announced the signing of Dave
Masur of Maplewood, N.J. to a
grant-in-aid. Masur, a 5-9, 165
pound midfielder, joins fellow New
Jersey All-Stater Gary^Durkin of
Neptune in the Gamecock fold.
Masur played at Columbia H.S.
and was named to the PARADE
All-America team, the NSC A A AfiAmerica
team, and received the
Coggin Memorial Award as the
outstanding soccer player in New
Jersey. He led Columbia H.S. to a
64-4-4 record in three years, 24-0-2
record this season along with the
state championship in Group 4.
Masur and Durkin were both
selected in professional soccer
league drafts, but opted for South
Carolina and according to Coach
Berson, "will contribute

The upset of Sigma Nu was not
the only one this week, which
featured no less than five ranked
teams being beat. Kappa Alpha, Pi
Kappa Phi, Thornwell and Air
Force ROTC were all defeated to
cause a shake-up in the order of
ivaiiid ill U1U lop 1U.
K.A, which fell from second to
fourth, dropped a tough 46-43
decision to Sigma Alpha Epsilon.
SAE is undefeated and making a
strong bid for ranking. Another
previously undefeated team, Pi
Kappa Phi, dropped one notch to
the fifth position after a two point
loss to Zeta Beta Tau.
Dormitory division powers
Thornwell and Maxcy traded
places in this week's rankings as
Maxcy defeated its next door
neighbor in a game this week (see
page 15). Coming into the week,
Thornwell was ranked sixth and
Maxcy 10th.
The other ranked team to get
upset was AFHOTC. The ROTCs
drop out of the rankings for the
first time this year after a 55-47
loss to Navy ROTC.
The biggest jump in the new
rankings was made by Kappa
Alpha Psi. Previously rated fifth,
the Kappas jump all the way to the
number-two spot as they survived
this week of upsets to defeat
Lambda Chi Alpha handily. Kappa
Alpha Psi faces its toughest

week is Columbia Hall. The dorm
division team defeated Douglas

Irmo Alumni, which became the
first Gamecock league team ever
to be ranked last week, moves up

to the number-eight position. The
Yellow Jacket alumni are undefeated
and are the highest
scoring team in intramural
basketball this season, averaging
over 79 points a game. This week
they swamped the Peeps 90-25 and
Drugs K. Funn, 72-46.
The only newcomer in this
week's ratings is the Student Bar
Association.
