Gamecock Staff Writer
Most people associate volleyball
with the fall, but that's not the case
at USC, according to volleyball
team member Mari Cuomo.
"We are currently competing in
United States Volleyball
Association matches in our area,"
Cuomo said. "The difference is
that anyone is eligible to play."
The team is not school supported
in this competition. "We are
sponsored by Budweiser of
Columbia," Cuomo said. "They
pay for half our expenses, and we
pay the other half by selling dif

Among the other teams competing
were Tennessee, Clemson, Kentucky
and Georgia. "They didn't
have an all tournament team, but
if they had I'm sure Leslie (Fern)
would have made it," Cuomo
added.
"This is a lot more fun than the
fall season was because there is a
lot less pressure because of the
tact that we are not school sponsored."
Cuomo said. "We don't
have anything to prove to the
school. Everyone just comes to
practice ready to play."
Cuomo added that the team
practices twice a week. "Our official
practices are on Tuesday and
Thursday from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m.,
but a lot of the girls go and practice
on their own. too."
The team has three regular
season tournaments left. "On Feb.
23 we go to Raleigh, N.C., and after
that we go to Rome, Ga.," Cuomo
said. The Lady Gamecocks will
end the regular season with the
USC Invitational. "We are all
really looking forward to that,"
Cuomo said.
THE REGIONAL tournament
will also be held here at USC on
April 26. "It is a lot like the regular
season in that the top two teams in
each region will qualify for
nationals," Cuomo said. "Having
the regionals here should really
help our chances."
"1 am really enjoying competing
this winter and spring more so
than in the fall, because the team is
much closer," Cuomo said. "Coach
Martino is doing a great job. She's
the only coach I'd ever want to
play for."
