Choir. After watching a rehersal, I
agree. The choir has just returned
from performing at the National
Prayer Breakfast in Washington,
D.C. Even after a hectic schedule
? four concerts with three different
programs in two days ?
they still display a joyous magic
that expresses their love of music
and comradeship.
"It's almost a fraternity,' Linda
Van Valkenburg said of the group.
"The best group in the whole
world," added Martha Gulledge.

1 professor and the choir director,
said it is because of this closeness
among choir members and the fact
that "I select exceptional human
beings for the choir," that make it
so unique and rich in talent. On
December 7, the Congressional
Committee for the Prayer
Breakfast invited the concert choir
to perform. "It was the biggest
honor," Dr. Darazs said, "to be
selected from so many university
choirs."
President Holderman said of the
invitation: "It is a tribute to the
young people who make the choir
one of the outstanding choral
groups in the world, and an outstanding
representative of
Carolina."
The choir members spoke enthusiastically
about the ex
perience. "It was a great musical
experience and a thrill to see the
j|P President," Doug Pickett said, i
"Even though it was hectic, the
reception and uplift we got made
I the trip worthwhile."
' Marny Potter felt it was "the
best the choir has done. And
Jimmy Carter blew us a kiss," she
added with a laugh.
The Washington trip is the most
recent of the many accomplishments
the choir has
v achieved. In 1976, the choir earned
L . two first place awards at the In|&
ternational Bela Bartok Choral
Competition in Hungary. In 1977,
the choir was featured in a live
worldwide telecast by the British
Broadcasting Company and the i

called "Christmas Around the
World." This summer, they plan to
make another trip to the Bela
Bartok Competition. They haVe
already started raising money by
selling oranges and have just now
started selling stationery. They
also plan to do benefit concerts in
order to raise more money for the
trip.
There are approximately 70
members in the choir equally
divided between music majors and
non-music majors. Membership is
by audition and most of the
members nave nad musical experience
in high school. Normally,
they practice around four to five
hours a week. 4The hardest part is
the work," Melanie Bishop said.
"You have to put in more than one
hundred percent. You can't do it
halfway."
The USC Concert Choir is fortunate
in having so gifted a
director as Dr. Darazs. Born in

teaching a boys choir in New York
when he was offered a teaching job
from Carolina. He is also the

Minister of Holland.
On May 1, the chpir will perform
at the Township. Until then, the
choir continues to perform at high
schools and many university
functions. Though the schedule is
hectic, the choir members love to
perform. As one member said,
"Music will always be a part of my
life."
