Carolina Customs Lab will raise
prices in proportion to Kodak's
price increase, Flashnick said.
Standard Kodachrome film will
sell for $6.50, up from $4.20.
Bobby Turbeville, Columbia
Photo Supply Co. store manager,
said Tri-x pan film, often used for
35 mm cameras, will cost $2.93
instead of $2.25.
The price of photographic paper
increased by 50 percent because of
the silver market, according to
Turbeville. His store sells plycontrast
double-weight paper
which is often used by students, for
$51.30 instead of the previous price
of $33.10.
"We do a lot of student business.
1 think people will think twice
before they shoot now." Turbeville
said.
Flashnick said KM) pounds of
black and white paper went to
$37.50 from about $25. while color
paper increased to $39.

USC College of Journalism said
the price increases have not affected
photojournalism students.
"Most of the students for the
semester bought their paper
before the increase." he said.
ALTHOUGH KMtOLL.MKNT in
photojournalism classes has increased.
Hillwig said the effect of
the price increases on future
classes remains to be seen.
Flashnick said panic buying
when the price increase was announced
caused a shortage. Six- to
eight-weeks will be needed to
restock stores with the higher
priced film.
Turbeville said customers began

stocking up while they usually wait
and buy it as they use it."
Eastman Kodak should not have
raised its prices on film since the
price of silver had not risen when

usually ages in six months, while
color film takes 18 months to
stabilize.
"The film was produced in late
1978 when the price of silver was
low," Flashnick said. "1 personally
believe Kodak made the
film when silver was cheap and
labor inexpensive, so they ought to
sell it at that price. Sounds like
price-gouging to me."
HILLWK; SAID Kodak is using
the silver market as an excuse to
raise prices. "There's not that
much silver used in paper or film,
not in proportion to the price increase,"
he said.
Flashnick said the price of film
will be lowered as the price of
silver lowers.
