competition in the third grade.
HE PLAYED football from
grade school through high school,
but only became a regular punter
his senior year. Until then, he was
the center for the punter. "I was
the only guy who culd really throw
the ball between my legs fairly
good," he laughed.
A walk-on at USC, he was redshirted
one year and then stepped
in as the varsity punter for four
years.
After his first year in the pros,
Runager said he believes younger
teams, such as Philadelphia,
Atlanta, Washington and Seattle,
are much more enthusiastic about
playing and more intent on winning
big games.
"The players are trying to make
something of themselves right
now, while the other teams have
already made it," he said.
Besides the degree of enthusiasm
differing in professional
and college football, Kunager had
to adjust to the difference in
coaching at USC and Philadelphia.
The coaching styles of USC
coach Jim Carlen and Philadelphia
coach Kick Vermil were "like
night and day," according to
Kunager.
"COACH CARLEN observed,"
Kunager said. "He mainly let his
coaches do the coaching. Coach
Carlen is a very calm guy most of
the time. He keeps himself under
control."
"The parallel with Vermil is nonexistent,"
said Kunager. "He's a
college guy, and he's got a lot of
hyperness in him. He hollers and

Kunager also said Vermil is the
offensive co-ordinator for the
team. "I have all the respect in the
world for him. He has a good
reason for doing it, because he
wins Willi 11.
Paradoxically, Kunager believes
the styles of coaching displayed by
Carlen and Vermil should be
switched. "In the professional
ranks, it's better to have a calmer
coach, like the Tom Landry type of

based on mutual respect. "A lot of
the coaches aren't as old as some

it's'the cream of the crop there in
the football ranks."

because the USC Gamecocks

in college: defeating Clemson and
going to a bowl game.
