Most people feel that this game is far too violent for the average person, and this may be true. But to the average player, it is far less dangerous than other body contact sports such as football. If you haven't made the correlation yet, I'm talking about the sport of rugby. The first Union was formed in England in 1871. This is the 109th year that rugby has been enjoyed as the largest crowdpulling amateur game in the world. In Europe some games draw as many as 1 50,000 people. It is easy to understand the interest that the game provokes in Europe, especially when most of the largest college football games only draw 50 or 60 thousand people. Rugby is growing here in America, and since its origin around the Ivy League schools in the 1970s, not only has it spread to colleges all over the nation, but almost every large town and city has a club or two. The increase of interest in rugby has been helped by the desire of men and wom.en,young and old, to continue playing a type of organized contact sport that is known for its fierce competition and post game festivities. This is a tradition here at the University of South Carolina. Carolina has been lucky to be Innertub By Jeff Coates Intramural Correspondent Attention all you land lubbers! The Co-Recreational Snorts Proaram is proud to announce the beginning of one more new Intramural sport here at USC. Co Rec Innertube Waterpolo, a sport for floaters and sinkers alike, begins Sunday. February 1 7 in the Gamecock Varsity Pool. What is Co Rec Innertube Waterpolo? Actually it is just what it sounds like. In the last eight seasons the Carolina Rugby Club has compiled an overall record of 93-24-2 and finished 1st, 2nd and 3rd in many prestigious rugbv tournaments such as the Budweiser Eastern Invitational in Galveston, Texas, Michelob Rugby Classic in Orlando, Fla., Mardi Gras in La. and St. Louis Missouri. The Rugby Club is entering into a new phase here at Carolina and is hoping for the support of the student body. Considering that rugby is an exciting game to play, it is also very interesting to watch, realizing that the game of American football originated from this game. Rugby is similar to football in many ways. Carolina is lucky to have several home games and tournaments this semester. The home games are played beside the p.e. center on fields B and C. With a 16 game schedule this semester, the Carolina Rugby Club is hoping to attract many new men and women players and to try and stifle the idea that contact sports cease after you leave high school athletics. The sport of rugby provides an outlet fr>r manv arhlfitps whn wnuld like tr> continue playing some type of sport that allows people of all sizes to compete at the same level. The goalie can be a guy or girl, but the remaining six players must be three guys and three girls (yes, sexual integration!) tveryone will sit in an innertube, and basic waterpolo rules will be followed. All USC students, faculty, staff and spouses aie eligible, and no official group affiliation is required. In other words, anyone can get up a team Greeks, non Greeks, on-campus residents, or off campus residents. Each Innertube Waterpolo match will consist of four six minute quarters, and will be officiated by paid referees. Matches will be played on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6 9 p.m., and Sunday af ternoons from 2:30 6:30 p.m. The Intramurql Office will furnish all in nertubes and numbered waterpolo caps, so all you need is a wet bathing suit and a desire for some soggy fun! For anyone who is interested in getting together a team, there are a few specifics to remember. A team entry will consist of a team entry blank, a medical history form from each team member, and a $10.00 Forfeiture Fee. Only one varsity swim team member (male or female) will be allowed to sign up per team. In following the day-to-day operational policies of the Blatt P.E. Center, each player will also be required to have a locker in the locker room. These lockers may be obtained by paying the $10.00 semester locker fee, or by paying 25 cents for a daily locker.
