An enthusiastic USC baseball
team started practice for the
upcoming spring season last week
under the direction of head coach
June Raines.
The team began outdoor drills
last Monday, but was forced to
practice inside later in the week.
Playing indoors has not limited the
players' excitement, according to
Raines. "Sometimes we have to
calm them down at little because
they think they are ready and can
go out 100 percent."

practice, conditioning and fun

According to Raines, stretching,
loosening, and basic fielding plays
are emphasized. "We do a lot of
stretching at first and just try to
loosen them up to play," Raines
said. "We've also been working on
double plays, catcher-to-second,
and so forth just trying to work on
the distance."
STRENGTH FOR these and
other drills has been maintained
by off-season workouts by the
players. The Nautilus weight
equipment at Williams-Brice
Stadium is used on a regular basis
Dy players in an effort to stay in
shape. Raines pointed out that a
long semester break can hamper
even the strictest training
program. "Most of them, or
probably all of them, in fact, really
eat out during the holidays," he
said. "It's up to us (the coaches)
to get them ready again."
"They're not as rusty, though, as
you'd think they'd be," Raines
said. "Baseball is a skill sport...
Foster signs
golfer to
grant-in-aid
USC golf coach Bobby Foster has
announced the signing of Clay
Uselton of Tullahoma, Tenn. to a
grant-in-aid.
Uselton, 6-0, 150 pounds,
becomes the first signee of Coach
Foster. He brings outstanding
credentials including the runnerup
position in both the 1978 and 1979
Tennessee Junior PGA. He was
also selected as the 1978 Tennessee
Junior Golfer of the Year.

With the season opener only a
month away, Raines feels confident
that his Gamecocks will be
ready in time. Players will be
tested next week by intra-squad
play and outside scrimmages in
the days that follow. "They'll be
ready by then," said the fourth
year coach. "If we get a break
in the weather, we'll be able to
go outside."
THE GAMECOCKS WILL play
53 games this season?34 at home
and 19 on the road. Opponents will
include Miami, Clemson, Furman,
and Georgia Southern.
