The Jerh depends almost entirely
upon one's tolerance for its star,
Steve Martin.
I've always liked the silverhaired
comedian in small doses ?
both in episodes of television's
Saturday Night Live and in his
cameo appearances in such films
as The Muppet Movie and The Kids
are Alright. But after about 30
minutes of Martin in The Jerk, I
was bored stiff.
Yet I'm hesitant to say Martin
was the reason for my boredom. I
feel the blame instead belongs to

movie even before the opening
credits end.
In what is basically a simple
story about a naive young man who
becomes a millionaire after inventing
a contraption called the
opti-grab (the purpose of which is
to keep glasses from sliding off a
person's nose). Reiner has tried to
preserve Martin's wild-and-crazy
image by allowing (or possibly
requiring) Martin to read every bit
of dialogue as if it was the punch
line of an incredibly hilarious joke.
Thus, in nearly every scene,
Martin seems to be begging for
laughter, and eventually his
grovelings become unnerving to
even his most die-hard fan.
Not helping matters anv is the
