Because record companies do feel
home taping is taking a bit of their
sales, is there anything they can do
to the home taper or radio station?
The only legal precedent in the

case of Universal City Studios, Inc.
v. Sony Corp. of America, heard in
the U.S. District Court for Central
California. In this case, the court
decided that taping with a
videotape machine, for noncommercial
purposes, does not
violate copyright laws under the
criteria of "fair use." Part of the
decision read, "The court is firmly
convinced that the challenged
practices in this case, though not
specifically addressed by the

David Shipley, a teacher at the
USC Law School, sees parallels
between the Sony case and home
taping from the radio. Shipley
said, "'Fair use' doctrine would be
the major obstacle of the record
company." He said that home
taping for distribution would
constitute commercial use and
would change the matter entirely.
This could constitute a violation of
copyright or "pirating."
Action the record company could
take against a radio station is even

keeps him tied down, as
well. Strasberg is not on screen
long enough to register much of an
impression.
"Going in Style" is an admirable
work, as its subject is one that
needs very much to be explored.
