King tribute
emphasizes
freedom
I
struggle
By Leroy Williams
Gamecock Staff Writer
South Carolina NAACP State
Field Director Isaac Williams told
blacks to not forget the freedom
struggle during a tribute to slain
civil rights leader Martin Luther
King Jr. last weekend.
The tribute, jointly produced by
thp IlSf phantpi1 of thp Nntinnnl

Association for the Advancement
of Colored People and Student
Christian Fellowship, was held
before a sparse audience in
Rutledge Chapel Sunday afternoon.
WILLIAMS, a former civil rights
worker, said that even though
blacks now attend USC, they are
not separate from others in the
black community. H6 said that to
remember King is to remember
that "his agenda included the ,

highly criticized when he died,
being labeled a 'troublemaker' by
some whites," Williams said.
Young blacks today need to live
with a sensitivity to pressing black
issues, Williams said. He
questioned whether blacks today
have the same commitment to
freedom that was alive during
King's time. "You were put here
for a purpose," Williams said.
"Millions of other blacks are
depending on you."
He reminded the black students
that someone before them made
sacrifices for them to attend USC.
He asked them to do the same ?
"to make it easier for someone else
to come in."
WILLIAMS STRESSED that
blacks have "a moral obligation to
make their political weight felt in
this country," saying more blacks
should be registered to vote.
The USC chapter of the NAACP
is relatively new, according to
acting president Eric Miller. He
said the chapter was organized last
otiucaici .
Miller said the immediate goals
of the organization are to stage a
voter registration drive and to
make black students aware of the
importance of the upcoming
census. He said the group's agenda
is geared toward next fall.
The NAACP chapter will move
toward unity with other black
organizations on campus, Miller
said./" .
