Making USC's College of
Education one of the top 10 schools
in the nation is a long range goal of
the new dean of education, John
Mulhern.
USC deserves to be recognized
among the top ten schools, but
Mulhern said it is not listed now
because "people don't know about
us and what we are doing.
Hopefully, within the next 10 years
we will receive the recognition that
is proper to the school."
MULHERN, who became dean
Jan. 7, has devised several plans
for establishing the school's
reputation nationally. He said he
wants to increase the school's
visibility and public service
throughout the state by offering
advisement to public school
d^dlCIUd.
Mulhern said he views USC as a
"sleeping giant just beginning to
awaken." One reason Mulhern
came to USC from Eastern
Michigan University is "the
potential for impacting on the
educational needs of the children ,
of South Carolina is far more,
promising here."
The nine-campus system allows
the school of education to provide
updated instruction to teachers
throughout the state. Mulhern said
the updated instruction will help
teachers deal with the problems of
"mainstreaming" students in

Mainstreaming refers to the
federal legislation which requires
placing exceptional and handicapped
students into a normal
classroom situation. "We want to
help teachers deal with the dif- !
ficulties of serving the needs of
handicapped, gifted and average
students in one classroom,"
Mulhern said.
The challenge of the 80s is to
provide equal educational opportunities
to all children, according
to Mulhern. "Not only will

new programs to meet new needs,
'but also I would like to further
strengthen the strong programs,"
he said. "As in all universities,
there is room for change and:
improvement."

MULHERN SAID the early
childhood and community
education programs were the *
school's strongest points. "As far
as the nation is concerned, USC is
further ahead in community
eduation," he said. Community
education encourages the citizens'
involvement in public education
through professional advisement
programs.
USC has two such programs,
according to Mulhern ? the
Community Education Center and
me citizens Advisory Board.
"The community education
program reflects the state
legislature's priorities and the
concern of the governor," Mulhern
said.
The USC College of Education is
stronger than many other schools
in the nation because most instructors
in the undergraduate
programs are tenured faculty
members and not graduate
assistants, according to Mulhern.
The large amount of participation
in practicums, in which students
work in real life situations, is also a
unique strength at USC, he said.
