THE MOST REVEALING numbers were in the defensive columns of
the scorebook. Dartmouth's 49 points represented the lowest scoring
total the Gamecocks have allowed all season. The Gamecocks had nine
steals, blocked eight shots and held the Big Green's leading scorer, Cleo
Robertson, to just 10 points.
"The key to the game was wnen we started playing tighter defense,"
Reynolds said. That defense plus some new-found team spirit has
enabled USC to put together three straight strong performances. In
their last three games, the team has outscored their opponents by a
total of 90 points.
"We know each other a little better," Strickland said. "We all have
the same goal in mind ? that's the key."
'I'll n; u/VMfcitucKS will meet a solid Florida Southern team tonight in
Lakeland, Fla. McGuire called the challenge "a good test."
"We need to do something about our record on the road," Hordges
said. "We need to establish some type of momentum."
As for the Marquette game at home on Saturday, Reynolds issued an
urgent warning to the Warriors. "If a team steps in here (Frank
McGuire Arena), thev better be readv to nlav nr wpVp anina tr?
( them out," he said. Hordges added that "this team is clicking."
