Jlf C UnNPV'C Intramural t OIwHlitO Sports Flash * Volume - 8 -? " Survey Concludes Intramural* provide needed exercise By Jeff Coates Intramural Flash Correspondent If someone were to come up to you and ask what you like to do most in your spare time, how would you answer? The intramural office attempted an informal verbal survey asking this very question, and some of the answers we received were very interesting, to say the least. Unfortunately, journalistic censorship does not allow us to reveal wnat turned out to be the most popular answers (go ahead, let your imagination run!). But we did ask another question that lent itself to more sociably-acceptable answers. The question we asked was, "Why do you participate in Intramural Sports at USC?" If you were asked this question, what would you say? Scott Reeves, a senior Computer Science major, participates in intramurals mainly "for the fun of it." He says he also "enjoys the taste of competition, and a shot at winning a sport championship." Bruce Earp, a senior Criminal Justice major, feels that intramural sports are "fun and relaxing,' and he likes to compete without the high degree of competition one finds in varsity sports. David Pumphrey, the Intramural Manager for Sigma Alpha Epsilon, says loyalty to his fraternity is important. Pumphrey likes to compete for the -i i-:- i - .... ueneiii ui nib iraternity in tne ail-campus point system, although he admits he does like "doing things for the fun of it." For Mary Helen Holden, a transfer from Kent State, intramurals offers a chance "to get involved around campus and meet new people." A recent survey of west coast college students revealed some interesting answers to this very same question. The most popular answer listed in their survey was "intramurals is a chance to get some exercise." Next the students said intramurals was "an opportunity to have fun and get together with good friends." Other students said they could release tension in intramural games, and the different sports offered a chance to meet new friends. The desire to compete was ranked as the seventh most popular reason. This survey also asked the question as to whv sturipntc Hn nn* - . r -W Iivi pui UV/lfJQlC III intramural sports. The lack of interest, time, and athletic abilities were ranked as the top three answers. In fourth place was the reason, "unfamiliar with the intramural program." No competitive urges and the high cost of intramurals were also mentioned. We in the USC Intramural Office hope what anyone who is "unfamiliar with the intramural program," and would like to participate, would call the Intramural Office for information. With the addition of the C-Rec Sports Program this year, there are almost unlimited opportunities for all students, faculty, and staff wo get involved in intramurals. Keep an eye on this Intramural "Sports Flash" for further entry information. We would also like to mention that there are opportunities available for officiating positions in all sports (yes, they do pay money!). Thom Heath, a recent graduate of USC, had some interesting reflections concerning intramurals. "We all need to play, and intramurals offers a unique atmosphere for us to fulfill that desire." With this in mind, we would like to invite all USC students to consider our intramural program.
