A Columbia priest believes USC
students have put "religion on the
back burner" and are eanehf in f Ho
o * v
"grade point average crunch."
Father Stephen Lynch of
Thomas More Catholic Centre,
1610 Greene St., said in the '60s
students were politically oriented,
in the '70s job oriented and consequently
striving for good grades.
"FOR NOW many students have
put Religion on the back burner. [
Just because they don't come to j
church, however, does not mean .
they don't believe in God," Lynch !
said.
I
He said he also feels most
students are not going to any in- !
stitutional church for various
reasons. One reason might be that ,
while they were growing up and i
going to church they may have
become disillusioned because the
concepts of the church weren't
relevant to them.
Lynch did say that in the combined
weekend liturgies (one on ;
Saturday, three on Sunday), approximately
600 to 700 students i
attend. |

The Catholic center is funded
through the Franciscan Order and j
money taken in through tithes and
offerings. :
Mark Caulk, chaplain at the new
Maranatha Christian Center, G10
Pickens St., sees the situation
in a different way. He felt this
campus has a basic need for
Christian outreach and that
religion is more important to
students than most nprmln think
i r
;
"Many students are looking tor
the Lord; there is a basic hunger
for God," Caulk said.
When a new Maranatha center is
beginning, the 24 other branches j
contribute to it. After that they are
self-supporting through tithes and
offerings.
KOBEKT DASHER, Lutheran 1
center chaplain at 728 Pickens St
says there is definitely more activity
now in terms of students
relating to organized religion.
"Religion is more popular now. |
Several years ago students ap- I
proaehed religion with suspicion," 1
Dasher said.

He also said, "students are
accepting religion as a narcissistic
way of coping with life rather than
as a way of getting strength for
society's problems."
George Duffie, Methodist center
chaplain at 728 Pickens St., has
been at the USC campus for 11
years. He has seen a definite increase
in the number of people
participating in organized
religious activities on campus.
In those 11 years he said the most
