Sen. Strom Thurmond, R-S.C.,
criticized President Carter's
handling of the situation in Iran

Columbia, saying Carter "has

been handled in a "terrible
manner. If the president had acted
immediately it would be a different
situation. We have to ask how
much longer our country can be
embarrassed. How much longer
can the American people be embarrassed?"
If the United States had a strong
president like Republican
presidential candidate John
uonnaiiy, rnurmond said, "the
Iranians never would have taken
the embassy, and if they had,
Connally would have acted immediately
and spontaneously."
THURMOND ALSO said the
shah should have remained the
governmental leader in Iran and

the United States would have been
better off if he were still in power.
Thurmond called thp hnilrinn nf
Soviet troops on the Iranian border
in Afghanistan "something we
can't stand for." But he would not
speculate on whether the United
States would respond militarily if
the Soviet troops crossed into Iran
until he had all the facts and knew
what the president was going to do.
Thurmond said the Soviets have
"sized Carter up as a weak
president and have decided to take
chances." He said a task force
should have been sent over many
years ago.
Thurmond supports an economic
boycott of Iran and a stronger
national defense. He also called for
a halt to the selling of high
technology equipment to the Soviet
Union.
THURMOND SAID he does not
object to canceling the 1980
Olympic Games in Moscow. He
would like to cut off all diplomatic
relations with the Soviet Union and
