WUSC-FM applies if* M J jor wattage increase By Megan Sexton Gamecock Staff Writer WUSC-FM has applied to the Federal Communications Commission to try to increase their power from 10 to 3,000 watts and obtain a new frequency. About a year ago, the FCC lifted a restriction that had provided small 10 - watt stations with protection from interference caused by stations with a higher wattage. This forced all 10-watt stations to increase power or be i "squeezed out" by larger stations, Bill Outlaw, general manager of the USC Student Media said. A study committee decided on | 3,000 watts as a reasonable amount because it can reach the greater Columbia area and serve the large number of students who live off campus. WUSC-FM has also applied for a $70,000 federal grant to pay for necessary equipment to expand the station. A new antenna, stereo transmitter, generator and other equipment will be purchased if WUSC receives the grant, Outlaw said. WUSC-FM applied for the frequency 90.5 that was vacated in December. There is no guarantee it will get this particular frequency, but they have met the FCC requirements and deadline. This frequency would enable WUSC-FM to keep its antenna at its present site, but there is always the possibility of having to go west of Columbia to find a place for the new antenna, Outlaw said. The possibility of sharing air time with the College of Jour- j nalism is also being discussed, Outlaw said. The College of j journalism neeas air lime on a radio station and WUSC-FM needs personnel because they would like to stay on the air 18 hours daily, Outlaw said. "It is possible that we can work out something so we can help each other out," he said. Outlaw hopes the FCC will make a decision on the increase in a couple of months, but it could take six to nine months, he said.
