PE center offers
extensive facilities
By Ken Hauser
Assistant Intramural Director
In order for the Intramural Program to operate effectively, adequate
facilities for conducting the various activities of the program must be present.
We are extremely fortunate here at Carolina to have one of the finest PE
Centers in the southeast. The PE Center has the facilities and resources which
not only accomodate the Intramural Program, but can also enable the activities
of the PE Department and the Sport Club Program to occur. In addition
to this, the Center affords many opportunities for individual recreation.
The list of facilities is quite extensive. The Center has six indoor basketball
courts and seven outdoor courts. There are nine courts available for bad
minton enthusiasts, nine racquetball'handball courts, four squash courts and
four volleyball courts. The six outdoor fields accomodate such activities as
football, soccer, lacrosse, rugby, and frisbee as well as many other outdoor
activities. The center also has twelve tennis courts, all of which are outdoor.
The Natatonum provides set hours for recreational swimming as well as
providing facilities for the varsity swimming teams. The Par Course, adjacent
to the Center, is the newest addition to the facilities list.
A wide variety of equipment is available at the Center. According to the PE
Center brochure, "Sports equipment may be checked out, without charge, at
the equipment issue window. Users must deposit their ID cards and sign for
equipment responsibility. Equipment must be returned the same day it is
issued by the person who checked it out. The ID card will be returned upon
receipt of all borrowed equipment. Handball gloves, tennis balls, handballs,
racquetballs, and squashballs are not furnished, but may be purchased in the
Center."
Lockers can be rented on a daily, semester, academic year, and calendar
year b^sis. The PE Center is generally open Monday through Thursday from
o:uu a.m. to lU:UU p.m., hriday Trom ?:UU a.m. to /:UU p.m., Saturday from
1 0:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and Sunday from 1:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. All activity
areas close 1 5 minutes prior to the building closing. The Natatorium
(swimming pool) is open Monday through Friday from 1 1 :30 a.m. to 2:00
p.m., Monday through Thursday from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., Saturday from
1 1:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Sunday from 2:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Please
remember that you must bring your University ID card to gain admittance to
the Center.

Here we are beginning the first
college semester of the new decade
of the 1980's. After watching the
"World News Tonight" over the
holidays, it seems like it would be
easy to contract the mid winter
blahs. Nothing seems to be going
quite right around the world, so
what can USC students have to look
forward to, besides rain, colds, and
more studying. We in the Intramural
Office feel we have something to
help break these blahs, and also
offer a little fun on the side.
The Co Recreational Sports
Program here at USC is beginning its
second semester of existence.
Headlining this winter semester of
Co Rec activities is the expanded
Fitness for Life Program. This exciting
self-motivating program
offers a structured point system for
a number of fitness activities.
Participants determine their own
goals at the beginning of the
semester, and combine jogging,
swimming, bicycling, or handballracquet
ball squash and-basket ball
to achieve points to attain their
preset goals. Our office keeps track
of all points and mileage accumulated
during the semester and
