The Faculty Senate again voted
to postpone action on a proposed
university grievance procedure at
a Dec. 12 meeting.
Following the report of Perry
Ashley, chairman of the Faculty
Advisory Committee, the senate
decided to delay consideration of
the proposal until the February
meeting. The Faculty Advisory
Committee has been working on
the proposed grievance procedure
since June 1979.
Morris Blachman, Government
and International Studies
professor, voiced a motion early in
the meeting to suspend the rules of
procedure so the senate could
create a committee to draw up a
new grievance procedure in
consultation with the Faculty
Advisory Committee.
THE MOTION to suspend rules
was approved by a majority of the
senate membership, and Blachman
moved that a committee be
composed of eight faculty
senators, at least two of whom
must be non-tenured. The committee,
elected by the senate, will
report back at the February
meeting.

down a little these days, but
he's still having a hard time
adapting to life without the other
half of what was once the world's

Benny, who is down to 650 pounds
now, traveled the country for
"Ripley's Believe It or Not," with
his brother Billy.
"It's been tough, very tough to
adjust," Benny said, reflecting in
an interview by his brother's grave
recently. "We were inseparable.
We did everything together. Never
were we more than 200 miles from
each other."
Their years of billing as the |
world's largest twins ended on July
14, when Billy died as a result of
complications following
a motorcycle accident near

To honor his brother, Benny, 33,
has erected a mammoth-sized
monument at Crab Creek
Cemetery near their home at
Hendersonville. The granite
marker weighs more than 12,000
pounds and contains two wings,
one for Billy and one for Benny.
On each wing is a carved sketch
of a motorcycle, noting that the
twins were famous for riding
miniature motorcycles as part of
their act. Each motorcycle bears
one of the twins' names and his
weight.
"I sure think Billy would have
done the same for me," Benny
said. "I'm real pleased with the
monument. I know it's big and cost
a lot of money, but I hope that it
represents a proper tribute to my
brother.
"Doing things in a big way has
always been a part of our
lifestyle."
When they were together, Benny
was the smaller twin at 727 pounds
while Billy weighed 747 pounds.
Benny reached a career high of 814
pounds, but has shed more than 160

diet imposed by his wife Tammy.
Benny plans to undergo a
stomach bypass operation in which
a large portion of his stomach will
be sealed off, allowing his stomach
to hold only a small amount of

motion widening the authority of
the proposed committee to include
recommendations concerning the
entire system of tenure and
promotion.
Citing USC President James B.
Holderman's comments at the last
general faculty meeting that issues
of grievance and tenure are
"inextricably linked," Wedlock
said, "You can t think about one
without thinking about the other.
Most grievances arise out of tenure
and promotion."
After a short discussion,
Wedlock's amendment was
defeated by a voice vote.
. Ashley opposed the committee
proposed by Blachman. He said
the Faculty Advisory Committee
would welcome any additional
faculty input, but added that a
properly constituted committee
should be responsible for reporting
back to the senate with recommendations.
