In the consolation game of the tournament, Zam Fredrick sank a pair of free throws with two seconds remaining to give the Gamecocks a 66-65 win over V CI XllUIlt. McGuire was pleased with his team's narrow win. ''Nothing but guts won it for us at the end. The game really means a lot to us because the kids were really down after last night. It's tough to get up for this kind of game, but I'm real proud of the efforts our kids gave tonight," McGuire said. The game's hero, Zam Fredrick, credited teammate Kenny Reynolds for some assistance in making the winning free throws. "KENNY TOLD ME I was shooting my fouls like a jumper, and he told me to loft the ball more," Fredrick explained. "I was confident that I could make them ... I felt like I was due." Fredrick led the Gamecocks with 1R nnintc whil^ -Mike Doyle turned in another steady game with 14. Jim Strickland led all rebounders in the game with 12 boards. "The Vermont game was really a low for me," Hordges said. "Coach McGuire told me that this was a new year and I had to start playing better if we expected to win. I just made up my mind to go out and hit the boards and give it mv best effort " HORDGES SUCCEEDED in redeeming himself for his poor performance against Vermont by scoring 27 points and grabbing 19 rebounds in the Gamecocks' 90-74 victory over Georgia Southern. "This is my last year in college and I don't want to go out a loser," Hordges confided after the game. "I've never been a loser before." On nearly every road trip that USC's basketball team has ma'de this year, the opposing school has honored Gamecock coach Frank McGuireinone way or another. ? In Portland. Me./on the night before th*? I JSC Maine basketball game, a testimonial dinner was held in honor of McGuire. The dinner, which featured a surprise appearance by McGuire's high school coach, attracted a crowd of almost 800. According to McGuire, events such as these have helped to put extra pressure on his USC basketball squad. On the following night, the Gamecocks lost to Maine 67-65 in overtime. "These testimonials are a real I.onor, but I think thev nut a lot of nr??;<;iirn nn nnr IriHc " MnHnifo explained. "When the kids attend these things then they feel people are expecting great things from them on the court. Sometimes they try too hard." McGuire, however, found little consolation in this explanation as he expressed obvious displeasure over his team's performance against Maine. "We played bad in the first half," McGuire said. "We were really flat tonight and we just played bad." Maine's All-American candidate, Rufus Harris sank a bank shot from the top of the circle with one second remaining in overtime to give the Black Bears their win.
